Sometimes,unreasonable evaluation has been given for results of basic studies on fires, although most concepts in technology for fire safety are based on knowledge accumulated by those studies. In this paper presented are discussion on the function of basic fire research. Basic knowledge on fires is indicated to have been needed for establishing appropriate technology to prevent fire losses. As typical examples,insightful interpretations are attempted of a few fire phenomena on the basis of basic knowledge. Emphasis is put on necessity to eliminate the presumption that basic studies cannot contribute to fire safety and to support the policy that basic studies should be funded for future technology to mitigate fire losses.
