China is home to a large number of ancient wooden buildings that are culturally significant but highly susceptible to fire risks, with challenges in fire prevention and emergency response. Tung oil coatings are commonly applied to the wooden components of ancient buildings for their preservative and waterproofing qualities. This paper focuses on the experimental investigation of the downward flame spread characteristics over pine wood panels with different thicknesses of tung oil coatings (0 g/m2, 20 g/m2 and 30 g/m2) under different external heat fluxes (4.2 kW/m2, 4.9 kW/m2, 5.7 kW/m2, 6.4 kW/m2, 7.1 kW/m2 and 7.9 kW/m2) and the thermogravimetry of samples with different ratios of pine powder and tung oil. The results indicate that applying tung oil on wood reduces the vertical downward flame spread speed, especially under high-intensity external heat fluxes. For example, at a heat flux of 7.9 kW/m2, the average spread speeds for pine with 0 g/m2, 20 g/m2 and 30 g/m2 tung oil thickness are 6.5 mm/s, 4.7 mm/s and 3.0 mm/s, respectively. Moreover, while tung oil coating is significantly effective in suppressing early ignition and flame spread speeds on wood surfaces, it contributes to a "slow and large flame" post-ignition, as opposed to the "quick and small flame" observed for uncoated wood. Lastly, by integrating the material characteristics and thermal properties of pine and tung oil samples, the mechanism is developed for the downward flame spread of wood panels with tung oil coatings. |
